On this website I am in the process of uploading all of my unpublished plays, and also those plays of mine that I’ve rewritten since they were published. Also all my unpublished poetry. I have divided it into five - EARTHBOUND, UNDERGROUND, AIRMAIL ,THE APPROPRIATION OF BIRDSONG and KELLY CONNOR etc, (which includes THE TRIAL OF KELLY CONNOR and STORY-SONNETS.) Links above.
After editing thirty-five years of poems, the following new one emerged as a kind of overview?
I TRIED TO WAKE
I tried to wake
But sleep won the argument.
Every story ended
‘they slept happily ever after,’
The Radio news recommended
Nothing but slumber,
Every kind of weather was ether
The fresher, the yellower,
The more wide open the spring flower,
the deeper
into the green bank of sleep I would be lowered
The worse the crisis, the louder the shouting,
The more intricate the music
Of most faint star-orchestras
My only answer
To God
And when I fell in love I fell asleep,
She was upset when daylight
Knocked me out just like the night
In all the ancient cities we wandered,
The buried strata
Leaked chloroform into the air
So I decided
To be sleep’s chronicler,
In sleep to number all of the dark’s colours,
Every drop of every sea and stream,
each grain of all mountains,
Every kind of insect,
Everyone everywhere
To be sleep’s minstrel, chronicler and King.
I have never finished a book
But I have slept through everything
